I had been having trouble getting motivated to work on the house recently. It was feeling like a futile effort. None of the rooms in this place were feeling done (well, at least done enough). I would look at each room and think, "Someday". Someday we will get the right furniture for this space. Someday we will fix the ceiling in this room. Someday we will get around to refinishing these floors. Someday we will get this bathroom working. I could go on and on. But I needed a room that I could feel good about NOW.
One of the rooms that was really getting me down was our bedroom. It felt like I had randomly just thrown things in there because that is what we had, not because it was what I wanted. I didn't like where the bed was, the artwork felt out of place, I couldn't tolerate the curtains, and overall nothing tied together in any cohesive way. I had to do something about it.
I really had zero budget for this project so I had to use what we already had available. Through a combination of rearranging and shopping our home I was able to pull something decent together. I started with pushing the bed to the other side of the room, and moveing the credenza to the wall opposite it. I figured it would be nice to have a private place where J and I could chill and watch a movie together so I brought in an extra TV that we had and set it up on the credenza. I also got rid of the grey IKEA curtains that I couldn't stand. They were great for the old apartment, but did not cut the mustard in our home now. I replaced them with some simple white curtains that did not compete for your attention in the room but still added some softness and texture to the space. I got rid of the awful red chaise that was in there and replaced it with a floral couch that had been sitting unused in my office. While I don't necessarily love the couch, it works with everything else much better than the chaise did and helps to fill a functional and physical void in the bedroom. I had recently scored an awesome persian style rug at the Salvation Army that worked great with the new layout. I layered it at the foot of the bed with a similar rug that was a hand-me-down from my mom. I finished everything off with a touch of greenery next to the window from a cool plant (that New Kitty is now using as his personal salad bar) that I had picked up at Eastern Market.
While not perfect, and someday (there it is again) I would like to do a complete overhaul in the bedroom, it is sooo much better than it used to be. It is a place that I can rest without looking around me and thinking about how nothing is how I want it. Having at least one room that it I am happy with has let me be friends with the house again. When I start to feel frustrated I can now retreat to our room, close the door, and muster up the motivation to keep working towards my vision of what the house will be like...someday.
I didn't really think to take any before pictures. But, incase you were curious I included some after pics below.
